«Visage écrit» est une tentative d'approche de la star japonaise de kabuki Tamasaburo Bando où on le voit interpréter des rôles féminins dans cette forme de théâtre japonais traditionnel. Le film donne un portrait en quatre mouvements de l’acteur japonais Tamasaburō Bandō V, considéré aujourd’hui encore comme l’un des meilleurs « onnagata » du théâtre kabuki. L'onnagata, c’est-à-dire l’acteur masculin qui interprète un rôle de femme, est une figure clé de la culture théâtrale japonaise.
