Trois générations vivent sous le même toit dans une banlieue nouvelle de Tokyo. Tatsu et Ryosaku, leur fils Yoshio, sa femme Ritsuko et enfin leurs deux enfants, Takao et Nakao. Un matin, on retrouve la grand-mère morte assassinée. L'enquête est menée par le vieil inspecteur Tagami assisté d'un jeune collègue. Ryosaku affirme à la police que sa belle-fille est coupable du meurtre de sa belle-mère puis il revient sur sa déclaration et se dénonce.
